Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze has been advised to join Liverpool in order to revive his career after admitting criticism is getting to him.

Gotze, 26, once hailed as world football’s most promising talents, has been in decline ever since scoring the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

Having returned to Borussia Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2016, the midfielder has struggled with injuries and illnesses and has found it difficult to break into the team under four different coaches.

Axed from the squad against Hoffenheim on Saturday following a disappointing performance against Club Brugge in the Champions League, Gotze has told kicker that the situation is a “challenge” for him.

“I am just not able to block it out,” he said of criticism.

Gotze’s former Dortmund and Germany teammate Kevin Grosskreutz said there is only chance Gotze can revive his career — moving abroad.

“Maybe it’ll do him a world of good to leave Bundesliga in the winter, move abroad where it’s all a bit quieter and where he knock his career into shape again,” Grosskreutz told Sky.

“Jurgen Klopp knows him well. He’d be a good fit at Liverpool.”

Speaking at his prematch news conference ahead of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea, Klopp was asked about speculation linking him to Gotze but distanced himself from transfer talk.

“It’s absolutely nothing I would want to talk in a press conference in England before a game against Chelsea, to be honest,” Klopp said. “If I have to say something to Mario then I call him and don’t talk about him. Nothing to say.”
